For this post, I am interested in the "why" behind serving. Why give up your family time, your recreational time ... to give it to others that may or may not appreciate what you are doing? The short answer - BECAUSE IT'S NOT ALL ABOUT YOU! The longer answer ...
- I feel called to serve others - in Luke chapter 35 in the Bible - "Be dressed for service and keep your lamps burning." I.e. be ready to serve at all times and be on the lookout for ways to serve others.
- It gives those employed in ministry (or, other non-profits, etc) a break. These folks that we love so much work a lot! They are also put through the emotional "ringer" all the time. It's important that they have periods of "rest" so they can continue to function at a high capacity. This is the main reason I serve at the Global Leadership Summit in Bozeman ... so the Journey Church staff doesn't have to run the event and they can learn and be encouraged (distraction free) for the upcoming ministry season.
- It's a good example for my kids. Even though they are young (3 yrs old and 10 weeks old, as of this writing) I still want them to see Holly and I serving others. It's very important to me to create a culture of service and "otherly-thinking" in our family.
Indeed, it's not about me. It's about helping others and loving them like Jesus would have. I feel like serving helps to ensure that I stay "balanced" in my world view. When you give of yourself with a "serving towel over your arm" and love others, it makes each day feel a bit more "as it should", wouldn't you agree?
How about you ... why do you serve? What organizations do you feel called to help with? Why?
