BLI just posted an update on their site (here). I am amazed at the work God seems to be doing through Levi & Jesse (the BLI founders) and their staff. We are humbled to be able to support one of the "Keep One Home" families and we plan on doing more in the future.
I REALLY like what BLI does for a few reasons ...
- BLI helps widows and orphans in a very specific way, making family units from orphans and widows. This directly addresses James 1 in the Bible, where we are clearly called to help widows and orphans specifically.
- Orphans are kept in their local culture. Now, I don't have ANYTHING against international adoption. I've seen numerous very close friends of mine adopt children from Ethiopia and it's truly amazing. I can't imagine what their families would be like without their child from Ethiopia as part of their family. But, somehow it "just makes sense" to me that we should try, when possible, to keep orphans in their local culture and BLI does just that (often helping orphans that are deemed "unadoptable" in the local orphanage system).
- I've personally spent time with them "on the ground" in Ethiopia and I was VERY impressed with their hearts and motivation behind their efforts. Hopefully, I'll be back there to help them in the near future!
